ZEMOS98 is a team of cultural workers. We try to create critical thinking, we try to deconstruct the mass-media messages, we try to weave networks, relationships and communities. We try to work in the intersections and margins. We try to work (g)locally, behind the borders. We try to take care of our networks and we try to reuse and remix all of our contents. We try to organize a Festival every year and we try to create a New Media Laboratory called 98LAB to learn about this things.
So, basically, we try things.

#AVALOZEMOS98 We ask for a loan

Topic: Economy / Format: Text / Project: About ZEMOS98

We are asking for a loan of 98.000€ to COOP57 (Ethical and Supportive Financial Services), an organization we belong to. In order to do so, we need guarantors for the requested amount, or most of it. And we have given ourselves a 40-day deadline. That is why we need you. We are doing this to initiate a process of independence from traditional banks, to make our projects less precarious, to consolidate the confidence bonds with the/our community and to stimulate a social and supportive economy.

We did it!

  • To initiate a process of independence from traditional banks. Maybe out of habit, or of ignorance, ZEMOS98 has not yet used alternatives to traditional banks. The economic situation, but especially, political and ideological coherence, have taken us to associate with COOP57 and begin a slow (but safe) process of disconnection with a model that increases social inequality and the precarity of the life of the weakest ones. The COOP57 loan should be addressed to end credits we have with the above stated banks, to cease paying interests to organizations which do not represent us. We feel it is much more coherent if our money also helps other projects with a similar ideology to ours.
  • To make our projects less precarious. We strongly believe that, occasionally, private initiatives can undertake projects with the vocation of a public service. In our job as intermediaries, we work with many institutions that find it difficult to meet payment deadlines required by law. This is something very common in our country and in the culture sector. We have always tried to have cash not to precarize the work of those that get involved with us. Hence, our payment policy has always intended to protect firstly to those more vulnerable, whilst our structure would take on the delays of the institutions paying. The economic crisis and the financial blockage towards small initiatives have pushed us to a situation in which all parts of the process are in the same discouraging position of job uncertainty. Us and those working with us. With the loan, we will be able to restore the situation.
  • To consolidate the confidence bonds with our community. ZEMOS98 is a collective that, from its beginning, has been defined by working on projects with significant social returns. Books, radio programmes, thoughts, meetings… have served the citizenship and a critical production of knowledge. Releasing the source code of our research and work, the use of licensing that invites to copy, remix and improve those productions, the commons as a territory of production and research where to generate a collective profit and the tense bonds with various public institutions have been some of the compromises acquired with our way of understanding the culture work. We believe it is a good moment to test our community, so they can return the favor and compromised with the project and endorsing what we do.
  • To stimulate a social and supportive economy. We were born as an initiative started by a cultural association. Because of its legal inoperability, we then created a sort of general partnership which later evolved into a private limited company (Ltd.). In fact, we have always worked as if we were a social economy formula: we have never generated profits that have not been returned and/or invested in the project’s own social activity. We have never shared profits. We have always been partners-workers. Now, it is clear that we have to get rid of the Ltd. and restructure as a social economy formula like a labour limited corporation or a cooperative. Because what we really want is to be able to carry out with our work in a professional manner and that our lives are sustainable. For all this, we will use this campaign to promote social and supportive economy and to start a change in our legal form.
